when i'm cruising where should my voltmeter be? sometimes i look down and the thing is over 15-16 volts. (when it was running) I always thought this was strange but i never paid too much attention to it. If this thing is overcharging would that fry some of my other components?

Re: regulator

Charging on a volt meter should read about 13.8 volts at WOT spiked. Over charging will cook the battery and can effect accesories. What engine and year do ya' have?

Re: regulator

Is the engine equipped with Trin and Tilt? What's the condition of the battery...old, new? If old, this may be the problem.

There was two different rectifiers for this model engine....one was an unregulating rectifier for non-trim and tilt engines...looks like a little tin can on a triangular base...and a rectifirer/regulator for models equipped with TNT. This one sat on top just under the flywheel.

You might also look under the flywheel with a flashlight and see if you can see any goo that may be laying around under there. This would be a sign that the stator has gotten hot enough to melt the coating on the stator core.

Also check the leads from the stator to the rectifier...they are yellow and would be connected at the terminal strip on the starboard side of the engine.

Re: regulator

it doesn't have trim or tilt. last night i checked all the plugs to see if they were firing, first only one was firing on the left side bank. then i checked again for the hell of it because i couldn't believe that only one plug was firing and this time only two plugs were firing but they were on the right side bank? the plugs on the left side were not firing at all. any ideas?
