reinforce transom

I have a 16 ft. aluminum boat 6 ft. wide I have a 50 hp motor given to me. My boat is rated for a 40 hp Other than legal ,are there problems. Do I need to reinforce the transom?

no it should be fine, you won't be able to insure it, could get ticketed for it and God help you if you crash and hurt anyone but other than that it should be good.

You'd be overpowered, but that's not really the issue. Depending on how old the boat is, and what outboards you're talking about, the weight of the outboard could be a real issue.

Back in the 60s and even into the 70s, the 40hp outboards like the johnnyrude big twins weighed about 150 lb, give or take. The 50s were a lot heavier, well over 200 lb.

Later on, the weight differences weren't that large, so it wasn't as much of an issue.

So...how old is your boat and what engines are you comparing.

I know one thing...hanging an old johnnyrude V4 50 hp on the back of a boat rated for 40 hp will get you in a lot of trouble due to the weight.

It's not just the horsepower.

No, need to beef up transum. Are we talking about a river boat? An older alum. boat with an older powerplant is heavy and does NOT do well in heavy weather. How old is moter and boat??

let me put this another way, if i am sitting in the aft seat holding the tiller and the nose of boat is more than 30% nose high "at idle". I would be hard pressed to take many chances with boat.
