hello every one.im in the middle of replacing stringers and transom in my 15ft bowrider blazer iv noticed a crack under one stringer that goes all the way thru and a chisel hole i made while taking out the old stringers. anyways the bottom seems thin to me. im thinking about laying a sheet of fiberglass cloth over the entire bottom. what weight of cloth should be used to do this.

That would work, just make sure the old glass is sanded down to good fresh glass and wiped down with acetone to promote a good bond with the new.

Epoxy and polyester are very different types of resin, so you need to pick one or the other. There are differences in how they are used, so any answers will be specific to the one you choose.

37 oz fabric is very heavy, it may not be what you want to use.

Mat and cloth are also different products, and 24oz wouldn't refer to either of them. I'm not trying to hassle you over the terms, only that it makes a difference in how the questions are answered. It will be a little difficult at first, but you will catch on quickly. Read a few other threads and you'll get a good idea of the terms, there are stickies at the top of the page with a great deal of info also.

Hi ranger42,
What "ondarvr" is talking about is the TON of information that is located here...http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...r/how-tos-other-great-information-288451.html

Lots of good info...

Also noticed that you said you already had a gallon of resin...Is it laminating/lay-up resin, or some general purpose resin?
Where did you get it at?
The reason I am asking is because there are types of resin that contain a wax additive in them.
You don't want to use these...

I'm sorry if you feel you need to go elsewhere, but for accurate answers we need to know exactly which products you plan to use and what you have on hand. If the names and terms used are not correct, or are changing, we can't be sure of the exact products you are asking about.

Re: renforcing the hull

ok here is what im going to use. Bondo? Fiberglass Resin is the same high-strength polyester resin that is used to build most boats. It can be used alone or with fiberglass tape, cloth or mat to repair damaged fiberglass boats, snowmobiles, jet skis, bathtubs and showers. It can also be used as a sealer on damaged and rotted wood, it seals concrete, is great on large or small metal rust-outs and joins most surfaces together while creating a strong and long lasting bond.

Sandable in less than 2 hours
Compatible with all paints, including gel coat and marine paints
it doesnt say anything about containg wax
