I recently bought a 1978 Sea Ray without the i/o. I have a Yamaha 200 and want to mount a Armstrong bracket on the back.Is the transom strong enough to hold the Yamaha 200 or do i have to reinforce it? I've had conflicting suggestions on how to do the reinforcing. Whats the best way and safest way to do it right? Thanks,Martico

Re: reinforcing transom for outboard bracket

I'm doing the same conversion on my 1972 Glasply. I removed the i/o and am going to mount a transom bracket and hang a 175hp Merc outboard.

I've been told that a transom at least 2" thick should be fine. I'm using a plate of 1/4" aluminum on the inside of my transom as the "washer" for the nuts, and to cover the hole left by the outdrive, and was told to use 3M 5200 caulk as an adhesive.

I bought mine from Seamount Marine Products in Tampa. They took the time to give be a 30 minute class on installing it.....

wkos, how expensive was the bracket? Did you have to go to Tampa from Alaaka to take that course? That adds a lot to the expense?

Proline, a little too far for me too. Yep, I saw it. I'll be in Tampa this Summer though, so I'll check out that Seamount Marine Products.
