reinstall lower unit

Hey all Can someone tell me the easy way to set up the Forwrd -Neut-Rev to reinstall the lower unit on a mariner ob. 75hp 1984 I put a new water pump on and I was able to do this before but this time I am out of wack some how and when I put it back together I am in forward all the time. I like to put everthing in rev to reinstall there is less chance for the unit to jump gear
