2000 Mercruiser, alpha 1, gen 2.

I replaced the impeller and reinstalled the lower unit to the upper. Now I am leaking gear oil out of the small hole in the lower unit. On muffs with engine off, water streams out of this hole. When I take the muffs off it slowly starts to leak gear oil again. Did I get something misaligned or break something when putting lower unit back on?

PS - please note that it sure seemed to take too much oil when I filled it back up. I pumped about 1.25 quarts into it before it started coming out of the vent hole at the top. Then had to add .5 quart to the lube monitor in the engine compartment. I thought the capacty was 39 ounces?

Thanks in advance...again.

dosent matter what kind of drive you have, it`s full when it comes out the vent hole on top unless theres a dip stick in the top cap.
It matters if the drive is "Dry or Wet" but always untill it comes out the top. your oil leak may be from forgetting the "quadseal" that goes between the 2 units. looks like a small black or orange "O" ring.

For most mercruisers:
drive shaft seals
water pump base seals
shift shaft bushing
quad seal
cracked case

yep...bet it's my water pump base seals. I didn't get the water pump face seal on the shaft properly the first time, so I removed all and installed without properly applying perfect seal. Thanks again, doc. Time to takeit back apart. I hope I can reuse these 2 gaskets!
