reinstalling lower unit

2002 150hp merc. Changed my water pump .that went good but when I tried to reinstall the lower unit I can't get the shift splines to match up . it bumps into the shift rod end but wont slide on in that last half inch. Im wore out from lifting that heavy sucker. I only got one more lift in me today , I sure need some advice. Thanks

While I was waiting on replies I put my wife in the boat had her move the throttle slightly . That rotated the shift ever so slightly about a hair width and it slipped right on. That was the ticket. I hate to answer my own question but , maybe others will use this info.
