I have a 2000 50 hp Mercury. It is the oil injection motor but the entire system has been removed. The problem I am having is that I live in a very sensitive area in regards to pollution and when I start it up it leeches a lot of oil out into the water and smoke in the air until it warms up and then it settles down. I would like to reinstall the system but I have not been able to find out where the oil pump is located on the block. I have a lot of diagrams for the system but I can't seem to locate where the oil drive gear and pump actually mount. Thoughts? Thanks Mr. Bill

First off, Pennzoil synthetic blend TC-W3 is all but smokeless. Available at Wallmart in the Sporting Goods department. I assume you are running 1 pint to 6 gallons of gas (50:1). Second, you might either check the archives herein or Google "decarb". Perform that in your driveway on muffs and the garden hose. Do you do much full throttle running? Can you do much full throttle running on your body of water?

What you see may be gasoline as well as oil. A cleanup of your carbs and possibly fuel pump (kits) may be in order, and if original still in that engine, time for replacements.

Petroleum products obviously float on water. If unrestricted they will settle out to one molecule high. One drop of oil was shown to cover a half acre pond in an experiment I saw once when allowed to settle out which was at the level of one molecule. In short, it doesn't take much to make a slick on the water.

Then take some pictures of the engine with the cowl off, preferably where the whole engine angle would be visible in the picture, but would fill the picture and it must be focused so that detail is visible. If you can't get that close, do the best you can for best focus. I'd like to see a right side, frontal, and left side view of just the powerhead....from the rubber seal where the cowling rests to the flywheel area.

Will wait.

I do use a 50:1 mixture. I will try the penzoil brand and see how it helps. I can't upload a picture. The site keeps saying it is too big and above the 2mb size. Thanks.

I would go the switching oil route long before trying to reconnecting everything, that's not knowing how it was disconnected, sometimes it's simple to reconnect, other times you need to buy almost everything again.

Pennzoil may help, but there are oils that will be far better at producing less smoke, go 100% synthetic, each brand will be different, just see if one works you.

I've used Amsoil Saber outboard oil for 20 yrs. in 2 motors, you can use it in ratios up to 100:1 and it's fantastic, low to no visible smoking and carbon build up is pretty much eliminated. My current motor is rated 50:1 but I use 70:1 and I put a lot of hours on it during the summer, not fishing but traveling around the lake at 3/4 throttle. At that throttle setting I get 8 miles to the gallon. One quart at 70:1 will do 16 gallons, I also use their gear lube, auto and lawnmower oil and greases with impressive results.

I agree on full syn if you can find it. Proven performer in other applications for me, since what I can easily find (blend) works as well as it does, full syn ought to be fantastic. I too wouldn't start tearing things apart or putting back the unknown if unnecessary. I learned a long time ago with the chemical/lubes we have today, try "Better Living Through Chemistry" (E.I. DuPont & Co.) first....got nothing to loose....not much maybe a "Sawbuck".
