Thinking about relocating my batteries to a forward compartment that can be vented. I have 2 sandbags in it now to help with keeping bow down. Batteries way about the same. My question, what guage wire would you reccomend? Shouldn't have to worry about line loss but just want to make sure. Run would be about 20'. Will be 2 crank batteries thru a perko and 1 deep cycle. Was thinking about #4 wire.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Relocate Battery

#4 will be fine. Expect less battery life from the extra pounding they will take....

Schematic,
Thanks for the reply and the warning. I figured on building a foam lined box for the batteries to help absorb some of the shock.
Mike

Re: Relocate Battery

Sounds like you have either over motored your boat, or are not triming the motor correctly. Remember that placing a battery in the bow is about the same as adding another person to the boat because of the added drag on the entire length of the boat. I think I would first try to adjust thr trim, but if you do change the battery location, use a larger wire then orginally called for because the longer wire will cause a lot of heat.

But hey, free advise is usually worth what you pay for it...

Re: Relocate Battery

tufftango,
Just for your info. Boat is not overpowered. It is an 18' aluminum hull with all of the weight including passengers towards the stern of the boat which does cause bow to hang a little longer. Not an uncommon problem. Planes fine with t&t but I put bags of sand in the bow so it would come down a little quicker especially if I am alone in the boat. But thanks for the input, it might help others.
Schematic,
Have a similar chart. Handy to have. Helps eliminate a lot of guess work and fires. I have decided not to do the install due to possible physical damage to the batteries. If I packed them in foam to absorb vibrations, I might lose some of the venting properties. Not worth the risk.
As always thanks for the help,
Mike
:)

Re: Relocate Battery

MGuckin, Do you have any type of Hydro Foil on your moror? Recenntly I've been tyin out a new to me 79 Johnson. I too have a lot of my weight slighly toward the stern. Anyhow I tried my boat for a day with out the attachment. Wow I couldn't wait to get home and put it back on where it will stay. It really helps bring the bow down faster...Just .02...
Bill.

Re: Relocate Battery

There is a fin available in Australia that looks very interesting..

Its made from aluminium, and they advertise that its the only one available that you can safely stand on..

They also say it doesn't affect top speed.

Looking at the picture, it isnt' "wings" like most of them, it extends roughly a foot behind the outboard, and widens as it goes back.. at its widest point its about 2.5 times the width of the cav plate..

I am thinking of gettng one myself, I think its called a DoelFin or something like that..

If anyone is interested I can probably find the real name..

regards

Frank

Re: Relocate Battery

Boat planes fine as it is. I have T&T and a fin on it. Moving the batteries forward was in an attempt to lighten the stern not neccessarily increase the bow weight. 389 lb. motor, 18 gallon fuel tank, 65 lb. kicker and 3 batteries. When I set this boat up, I discovered numerous problems with it and all are corrected thanks to help from this board.
Mike
:)
