Relocating Smart Tabs & Filling Holes.

2 Question:

1. Initially, I made the mistake of mounting the smart tabs too close to the middle so now I have 10 extra holes on either side of my stern drive. What I did initially to fill them up was just fill it with 5200 and drive the SS screws back in.

The transom is black but the 5200 is white and it oozed out a bit so it's quite ugly.
I was thinking of maybe taking out the screws and filling the holes with marine tex and match the color some how? (Dealer suggested Krylon spray paint) Or should I just leave well enough alone? West marine sell a thing called antibond that's supposed to clean up 5200 very well.

2. Now my tabs are mounted correctly, but the left tab mounting plate is about 1/8 too far out, so it's catching water and causes quite a spray.
If I take it out of its current location and remount it, chances are I'll still "catch" the old holes. I'm worried that the "lip" sticking out over time will forces the plate out from the hull with the force of water.

My question is that can I fill the holes marine tex there, then redrill the holes again for the tab relocation? Chances are the new holes will be half in new fiberglass/half in marine tex, will this be strong enough?

Thanks in advance.

Kinda a bummer of a situation. I can't comment on the color matching, but MarineTex will definitely be your best bet for filling the holes and drilling into for the new ones.

Ayuh,... I'd Marinetex All the unneeded holes, 'n paint 'em with Rustoleum black...

Ditto on the tab ya gotta move,...

The Marinetex should be Plenty strong enough...

I've never handled marine tex before, is it like play doh after it's mixed or will it need to be handed with a spoon or syringe?
I'll update this thread with pics hopefully for future newbs like myself

Agree with that, be sure to mix the marine tex to the letter and let it set as recommended, very good results re drilling it..

It is like using a thick epoxy. Very easy to use and manipulate. So more like play doh, just use a plastic squeegee to apply.
