I am waiting for parts (two Voltage Regulators) for my 1996 Merc 150HP. The service manual installation instructions do not mention using Thermal Grease between the regulator and the power head when installing. Usually thermal grease is used when attaching electrical heat generating stuff to a larger (heat sink) . Anny opinions, I don't believe the grease will effect grounding of the regulators as the two mounting studs should provide the electrical ground. The regulators are 5 wire (no ground lead) part # 815729-3.

It wouldn't hurt, but unlike the water cooled monster they invented about 1990, they don't give off a lot of heat anyway. Odds are good they'll substitute the 6 wire ones. Just ground the black wire.

hope it helps
