Indoor outdoor cheap carpet. Good staple gun with stainless staples. Stainless bolts or screws. On this forum I wold assume its a 20 footer or less and a single two by 6 would be plenty.

Perfab your bunks, bring tools needed, launch the boat and tie it up to the dock. Unless you want to do the job again in the near future, I would suggest using Boat Trailer Bunk Carpet - iboats.

What he said... with the following caveats and additions: It's much easier to cut off rusty bolts than to try to reason with them, so be prepared to destroy them; preferably with more than one method. Bring tools you're not sure you'll need because if you don't have them, you'll need them: cordless drill, cordless impact driver, lots of spare hardware, ordinary sockets and wrenches. I'm a big fan of stainless steel hardware wherever possible but I live on the coast. YMMV.

I like putting carpet on bunks with Monel staples; something I would do ahead of time at home (a pneumatic stapler is your friend). Leave enough of the reverse side of the bunk free of the carpet to mount the bunk supports. Check your boat every now and then to make sure it hasn't wandered off or sunk. Don't drink any beer until you're done.

I did the same as the other guys on my old trailer, but I also took some pictures with my phone so I could get the angles of the bunks pretty close before retrieving my boat so there were very minimal adjustments once the boat was on the trailer.

I left the boat on my trailer, removed the tie down straps and gently jacked one side up using my floor jack and a 4x4. I removed the bunk and used it as a pattern to make a new one. I used a dry pressure treated 2x6 but you can use a Dog Fir board too. Home Depot and Lowes sell outdoor carpet. Don't carpet the under side of the bunk, the part that bolts to the trailer, so that air can get in and dry out the carpet.

Made some stands of 3/4" plywood formed into box sections (I have an aluminum skiff, maybe 600 lbs.), raised boat off trailer and supported on stands. That way could do the work in my side yard, with access to air compressor/impact wrench plus other tools. Also, no time constraints (my jobs always take longer than estimated - wife hanging off-shore for 5-6 hours probably not a good move :) ).

Here is how I do mine not hard to do just take your time and you can fix anything else on the trailer that needs fixing at the same time.
Plus if you need to cut any bolts off you will have all your tools handy to use.

Re: relplacing bunks

I recently replaced the carpets on my boat trailer as well. For it, I simply parked the trailer on level ground, bought new 2x4@8' boards, covered with new boat carpet rug (from my local boat store), lifted / braced one side of the boat, removed the old 2x4 board, installed new 2x4 board, let boat down, then screwed 2x4 board into position. Repeated process for other side. End/end for both bunks (within my driveway) was completed under 2 hours. Especially since new 2x4 boards can be new rug covered - before lifting the boat. When doing the rug carpeting task on new 2x4 boards, I used a 1/2" air staple gun. After all, new job needs a new tool. LOL!! Should have bought an air stapler gun years ago. Overall, easy task. It's actually easier than it looks.
