Ok, I have isolated the problem to the remote control box. My box is a 'power pilot' Early Model Single lever remote control shift box.
The problem: It will shift into forward just fine. But it wont go into reverse. It wont even go all the way back to the middle position (neutral) where the trigger should lock in. It appears to stop a fraction of an inch from locking in.
So my question, what inside this box of magic parts could possibly be bad preventing shifting to reverse. I did notice the GLUE like grease that is used in these things  Im sure thats 'factory spec' but for all the friction in these things, seems a bit adhesive to me?
Anyways, thats beside the point. In the picture, the arrow points to the only part that I can find wear on. Just that spot on that part seems worn. Could that prevent neutral and reverse?
My cables are in good shape. And now that the box is disassembled, the cables travel just fine their full amount.
