I have a VP4.3GL 1997 and have just removed the remote control ie-gear shift and throttle with a power trim tilt and neutral start up only.
I would like to replace it with a new one, the only part number on it is 126019 and an OMC stamp and M with a circle. Any ideas if I can get one or which other unit could I get to replace it.

Re: Remote control

If that is a wall-mount, part number is probably 176482. I would think they are still available thru a Johnson/Evinrude dealer.

I have building a list of parts for my boat using Marine Parts Source. They appear to have a vast inventory of stuff. Using WillyBWright part # I found that it may have been replaced with 176917. They have a picture of it an they have stock. They replied recently to to email questions I had within 24 hours. Good sign! Below is some link info.

Re: Remote control

Why don't you just get one from a Volvo dealer, you have a Volvo Engine and drive don't you?
That control you have is from the days when Volvo and OMC were together in a joint venture.

Re: Remote control

Just ask, they probably have one on the shelf. If not, PN 3885624 is what you want. It lists for $180 here. and has the trim/tilt button in the handle.

Re: Remote control

I just replaced that exact control for my 1997 Volvo Penta. The Volvo control is around $170 minus discounts. Fast Eddies Marine on the net carries them.

When I ordered my part I asked for part# 3856901. it was replaced by another part number which may be the one DonS referenced above.

You have OMC ends on your cables at the control side. The gear shift cable will still work because there will be an adapter for that style. The throttle cable will have to be replaced since it only accepts standard type 33 cables.

I just went ahead and replaced both my cables.

Edit: The part number than DonS gave you was the final part number. List price is $179.27.

Thanks very much, guess I will order 3885624 then. It costs around £200 GBP over here, does anyone know if I can get it cheaper from USA and any web sites that you can recommend please?

Re: Remote control

They can be found on ebay for around 80 bucks. That is what I did with my 96 wellcraft with 4.3L VP with SX drive. Replace the cables while you are at it. all very easy to do.

Re: Remote control

I just placed an order with marinepartsexpress and it cost me half the price of the UK.
I haven't long changed my gear shift cabel and it seems like I will not need from the above posts.
Does anyone know what part throttle cable I will need though?

Re: Remote control

You have to figure out what length you need.

It is just a standard type 33 cable just like the shift cable would be if you were going to change it.

The cables that you have in there now are OMC on one end and type 33 on the other.

How long have you had your shift cable in there? If more than 2 years, I would just replace it while you are there.

I would reccomend the Teleflex TFXextreme cables.

Re: Remote control

Shift cable has been there for just a year with little use really.
As I said I have ordered the 3885624 remote unit.
The throttle cable is in pretty good condition too, so is it a case of just fixing them to the new remote when it arrives.
I want to prepare for the job beforehand and not wait for other parts.

Re: Remote control

No there aren't. You will see why when you get it. There are adpters to go from type 33 to OMC but not the other way around.

When I was putting mine together I was scratching my head trying to figure out how I was going to make it work with the existing cable. I ended up calling Volvo and speaking with an excellent tech on the other end. I emailed him a picture of what I was up against and he set me straight.

For the shift cable, there are a variety of mounting options on the control of which one is the OMC cable.

Re: Remote control

Thanks Bruce, I will get a new throttle cable then as soon as possible.
For the trim/tilt and engine neutral start up is it just a case of connecting the wires in.
I had 3 wires going to trim/tilt and 2 connectors going to the cut off, is that the same?
