i just bought a new boat and engine, second hand, 1984 90hp mariner 6 cyl. remote control has a red button, old owner said not to push it or engine trips off,and wont restart, but he never pushed it himself, and he dont know how to reset it, remote has up and down tilt, and ignition, built in. does any one know how to reset this, in case i ever trip it accidentally, very concerned, john.

Re: remote control

We'll need more info than you've supplied. What make/model boat? What make/model/year remote? Is there kill switch on the helm where you hook a lanyard? Is there another button or area to depress on your throttle to disengage the prop? Take a few pictures of the remote, and show us exactly what you're talking about. If the previous owner never pressed it, you have no clue what it actually does, and neither did the PO. If it is indeed a kill switch, then there's a reset somewhere. Again, post some pictures. Not just of the remote, but the boat an motor, too.

Re: remote control

its a shetland 570. outboard is a mariner 90hp 6 cyl, 1984. remote is quicksilver, dont know what model, it has a T handle, with tumble switch for tilt and lift, and THE red button on it. on the back of remote box it has a key ign turn, and a black switch that slides up and down, but it wont move. on top of remote it has, start throttle lever only used when engine is starting. no kill switch, i know of, but engine turns off with key. i dont know what a lanyard is. cant download pics. thanks

Re: remote control

I'm going to guess that's the kill switch, which has been jury-rigged to work without the lanyard. Look here for a selection of switches and lanyards.

Re: remote control

Jury-rigged means it has been made to work via some sort of improvised "fix".

Even if the thing isn't a kill switch, I highly recommend you install one (and use it). Safety first!
