Remote controls on 470 and alpha 1

I recently went through a troubleshooting as to why an engine wouldn't start up while the stern drive was attached. It then turned into not starting while the stern drive was attached. So, now I am trying to put the remote control back together. I am working with a 1988 Mercruiser 470 and alpha one.

I disassembled the remote controls from the dash, and took then apart. I then tried to completely open it up to grease everything, but couldn't get past this.

I then greased what I could, but do not think I got it back together correctly. The spacing down the seam was not parallel all the way through, and the throttle is stuck in this position.

So, below is what I sort of got to, and couldn't get put back correctly.

Is there any way to open up the one plate that is on the first picture? I tried removing the screw on the lever. Also, should I remove the sterndrive to move the shift cable to allow proper installation?

Any help/diagrams/instructions appreciated.

What made you think it was a control box problem?

Re: Remote controls on 470 and alpha 1

Well, there was one problem that I believe led to the other. I originally pieced the upper and lower of the outdrive to the wrong gear when the intermediate shift shaft was in the forward position. When this was installed on the boat, I tried rocking the controls to instigate movement. During this time, I believe I messed something up because of the reaction of the controls (neutral button not sticking out, limited movement, excessive movement) changed while I was trying to "rock" the shift into the right position. So, I installed the stern drive correctly this time, but am having a tough time, making sure the shift controller is working properly.
