Thanks to the help I received from this forum, I ordered a remote assembly kit from seaway for my 1972 9.5 hp johnson. The kit installed flawlessly, but I am having a hard time now that I have hooked it up to the remotes on my boat (Johnson Ship-Master 2 handle).

After installing the remote, I was suprized to feel how hard it was to operate the handles....they are very stiff to the point of not being movable. The remote will not really budge the trottle or shift the motor. The cables are old no doubt and were taped up with electrical tape when I bought the boat.

I know very little about the remote cables. is the tape interfering with thier operation? is there an adjustment that needs to be made? The cables seem a bit long, can I cut them down? Will this help?

Thanks in advance for your assistance! This forum has been very helpful!

Re: remote controls

Thanks for the reply. I couldnt go to bed with it all torn apart, so I went back out and started tinkering. I was able to adjust the cables so that it will shift gears relatively smoothly. Throttle is working now too, but there isnt much movement on the remote. Is it possible that there just isnt as much motion on the 9.5 HP?

Thanks

Re: remote controls

Be sure to buy the correct cables for your Shipmaster - there are two different types. The pre 1979 cables (Type 400) have ends that are affixed to the cable with set screws. These screws are visible on the cable ends. The cables made for control boxes manufactured in 1979 and later (Type 479), have press fit ends.

You can not use the newer cables with a pre-1979 box. Similarly, you can't use the older cables with a newer box. Also, the motor that you have has nothing to do with the cables that you need - its all about the control box.

In order to replace your cables, you are going to have to open up the control box. While you have it open, thoroughly clean it and re-lubricate it. At least some of the binding that you have experienced, could be from dried/hardened grease that has lots of dirt in it.
