Hi Everyone, my first post here. I have a 2003 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi-DF. One the first drive out this season after a full service and many repairs (and many thousands of dollars spent with the shop) that blew an oil line on the remote oil filter. Specifically, the crimped fitting separated from the from the barbed steel elbow that connects to the remote filter mounting block. When I disconnected the hoses I made sure to note which hose attached to which port on both the pump side and the filter side. I’ll see if I can make this clear: I noted that the way the hoses had been connected seemed that the hoses crossed over each other on their way from the pump to the filter; i.e., the hose most proximal to the engine down at the pump (the more starboard hose) connected to the most distal (port) side of the filter and vice versa. This seemed like poor design, I thought. Unnecessarily complicated.
The filter mounting block has embossed arrows indicating direction of flow. The pump housing does not as far as I can see. The hose that failed was connected to the return side from the filter to the pump. The hose itself did not blow, but the barbed fitting blew out of its crimped sleeve.
I have found a diagram of the system, but it only shows one of the hoses, not both. It does appear, however, that the hose routing is meant to be such that the starboard hose attaches to the starboard sides at both the pump and filter. The port hose is not shown. This makes be believe that the hoses were crossed. The oil being pump backward into the filter, resulting in the failed hose fitting.
Can anyone confirm the proper hose orientation? I am going to confront the shop about this because I suspect it is their fault, but I’d like to be sure. They have been highly unprofessional, unreliable, and gaslight me at every turn. I don’t expect them to own up to it if it was their fault.
I have ordered replacement hoses and intend to do the repair myself because I do not trust this shop to make the repairs anymore. So, I need to confirm the proper hose routing.
I’ve attached a couple photos with the connections circled with red and blue corresponding the way the hoses were connected.
Hopefully that was clear enough. Thanks in advance for your help!
