I just acquired a 1987 35hp mercury with remote controls. When i bought the motor we had to take it off the guys boat so we removed the throttle contols. Now i cant figure out which cable goes to the shifter and which to the throttle. Also i cant figure out what the black things with the slot in the middle on the ends of the cables are for and where they connect, and lastly there is a latch on the bottom of the cowling, in the same general area, that comes up and latches. Whats it for? Thanks for help in advance!

Re: Remote shift connection

With the box in neutral the cable with the shortest distance from the end, to the anchor is the shift cable

Or you can watch the cable ends as you move the shifter from neutral to forward. The first cable to move is the gearshift. That's because the engine needs to go into gear first before throttle is added.
