Just finished putting my 1996 mercruiser 5.7 with thunderbolt 5 ignition back together and want to test run the motor before installing it back in the boat. I've seen several videos of people starting their motors but no one explains how the wiring is done from the battery to the motor. Someone please chime in here and let me know...

Positive battery cable to starter + lug, ground to block at flywheel cover.

On ten pin engine harness plug#6 pin is +12 v out from engine to boat take two jumper wires twisted together in #6 pin , one jumps to #5 which is ignition 12v, other jumper momentarily put into #7 to bump the starter motor. When engine catches pull wire out of 7 leave ignition in 5 powered up. Put garden hose into water from out drive to thermostat housing hose and clamp down, will take care of cooling.

Or just connect the battery + to the coil +.... Does the same as jumping ten pin plug pins.

Just so I'm clear....Im still going to connect the positive lead of the battery to the starter and the negative side to the block. Then run a separate positive wire from the battery to the positive side of the coil. Then jump across the relay behind the carb to crank over the motor.
