I've read several older threads about installing an aftermarket trim switch on the motor itself to simplify putting the motor support on for travelling. I know where the blue and green wires connect, but am not sure if there is a power source for the 3rd wire under the cowling.
It is a 1999 Yamaha 40HP, 2stroke.
Was hoping all wires could be connected under the hood and not have to run an external lead to the battery.
Any help appreciated.

Searay, I looked up your trim motor ( Trim Motor Yamaha 40-100 Hp 1995-2003 62X-43880-00) and it appears to only have 2 wires, a blue and green. Please verify exactly what you have. Post a picture. What is the model number of your motor ( from the plate on the engine). On a 2 wire system, +12 to blue and gnd to green, the trim goes up. Reverse the polarity and it goes down. If you add a switch, you want to do it on the relay, so you are not running high current thru the switch.

My switch has 3 wires. I know where the blue and green wires on the switch go. The 3rd wire on the switch is for a 12 volt source. I was asking where to connect the power wire under the cowling. I was hoping I had a hot wire there as opposed to running it back to the battery.I think there is a red wire that I could tap into but wasn't sure.

Can't you just follow the battery wires into the motor and tap at an appropriate place?
Also, the OEM switch has a triangular connector. You may already have the mating triangular plug under the covers, near where the OEM switch would go.
I think any 12 v location would do. Perhaps the starter solenoid.
Good Luck

Thanks, that is what I am hoping. Switch should be in today and it may have instructions, but I'm guessing it will say connect red wire to hot lead. LOL

So I happened to remove my power cable to my 1989 Yamaha 175 ( I know it different, but may be the same for this instance) and there is a small wire pigtail attached to the positive battery cable at the starter solenoid. It seems to power my trim switcheck. Your setup may have one also. Note my finger is pointing to it in the attache'd photos.

Success with trim switch.
I knew I had to find the blue(up) and green(down) wires to the relay and a hot wire to install the 2nd switch. I was digging around under the cowling at the relay and low and behold I found a pig tale laying under the harness with a cap on it and it had the 3 wires I was looking for. I suspect this harness is used for more than one engine and some come with the trim button on the motor. I stopped by the Yamaha dealer to see if I could purchase the corresponding plug so I could just connect my wires to it and plug it in, but after 2 of the guys looking at parts for 15 minutes they finally decided you could only buy the assembled harness, not just the plug.
So back to plan A. I cut the plug off and spliced the switch into it and it works slick as a whistle.
You can see the switch mounted to the motor housing under the wires. I drilled a hole to run the wire inside and put a rubber grommet in the hole to prevent chaffing the wire.
