I need help removing the clamp swivel bracket on my 1972 Merc 140 from the center section of the motor. The pivot cracked on it where the steering rod goes through and I am afraid I am going to drop the motor in the drink.

If you need to remove the steering rod, you need to drop the gearcase, and pull the powerhead and then the shift rod. After that you need to remove the exhaust extension, under the powerhead and that will expose the upper motor mounts. There is usually a spring clip retainer on the lower yoke, which you will want to remove. Yours might have a large nut instead.
