G'Day all,

I have cracked one of the perspex drink holders on the bow of my Elegante!
It is held in place by 4 chrome posts with a matching dome on top. Has anybody here removed one of these?
I don't know whether the dome is a push on covering a screw or is actually screwed on. Given that I can't find the Doral website anymore I am a little concerned at damaging the caps using the trial and error method of removal.

The top of the chrome posts is a cover for the screws. Pop it off with a small screwdriver and you will be fine...

Thanks bannister, I thought that may have been the case.

BSA,
ah those are chrome electroplated "Snap Caps". they can be difficult to remove if they are recessed. a small screw driver blade works, but be careful not to damage the acrylic. i consider the caps disposable so scratch them instead of the acrylic.

since they're used all over the boat, i just ordered a boat load from pro-dec.com. they should be the half inch version. i actually haven't tried them yet since i just received them a few minutes ago. i will try them this weekend and let you know if there's a problem.

What did you decide to do about the cupholder? I've removed mine twice to clean them, and keep looking at a reasonable replacement because mine are very sun checked. I was considering trying to have some remade out of mahogany, or the clear green lexan like newer Dorals (mine's a 2003). Just curious, and BTW, nice purchase!

Re: Removal of drink holders

the snap caps are exact OEM replacement, but i am having a hard time pressing them in.

i'm in the process of having an acrylic platform CNC'd for my espresso bar. it goes where the original TV was mounted. i mounted the TV where the mirror was and had an acrylic plate CNC'd in the shape of the mirror for the TV mount.

since the cup/plate/bowl holders are clear acrylic inside the cabin, i used clear acrylic to match (i'm moving the Doral cup holders to the espresso bar acrylic platform). but i may recreate everything in green acrylic if my CNC guy can find the materials. i can inquire if you can't source OEM green cup holders.

Re: Removal of drink holders

I thought of making some out of ipe or mahogany, but then I thought the upkeep would nag at me. I like the look of the green acrylic, so I'll have to look for sheet of that and have someone machine it for me.

Re: Removal of drink holders

Thanks for the help.
I see I need to order 100 of the snap covers as a minimum so I'll have plenty to spare for mistakes...
I will be looking for green acrylic to match the existing holders around the boat, If I can find a sheet the correct thickness and colour I may look at a drink holder for the helmsman! So far that is the only unacceptable compromise I've found with this boat.

Re: Removal of drink holders

Couldn't find any green tinted acrylic sheet so I now have two new clear drink holders on the bow.
Not overly expensive either!
If anyone has a supplier for the green acrylic please post the details, I think the green looks better... the clear is okay for now though.

Hey BSA, give these guys a shout. They may have a contact in Oz to help you out.

Thanks r.j.dawg,
I have just had a pair of new clear units fitted but will see if I can get the green for your referred supplier.
