I am trying to remove the foot on my rude 175. Don't know the year but the model number is E 175 TXCUA and the serial is R 1500554. The shift linkage is being a pain in the butt. Does anyone know any secrets and are there any other things that I should watch out for. I am pulling it to replace the water pump. Thanks for any help.

Re: Removal of Lower unit

You have a 1987 175hp Evinrude. We know that the shift linkage is difficult but you don't say what kind of problem you're having.

The 3/8" hex head shoulder bolt that has a regular screwdriver slot in it..... I remove it using a long 1/4" drive extension with a 3/8" universal swivel socket attached. I then use a long "finger grabbing type tool" to pull that shoulder bolt out...... and insert it when reassembling.

Re: Removal of Lower unit

That helps alot. That was my plan for when I get back to it, Just wondered if someone knew a secret to get to it other than a long extension and hoping that it doesn't fall down in when removed. I had an old Chrysler 55 on my old boat and I could have the foot off it in about 5 mins. Hoping this new pump solves my problems. Thanks
