Hello Everyone!

I am removing the mounting bracket from the shaft of the above mentioned outboard. I am in the process of painting the whole motor. I also have to rebuild the tilt-trim due to a hydraulic leak. With the motor still on the boat, I attached an engine hoist and removed the six bolts holding the bracket (midsection assembly) to the motor shaft. All was going well until I discovered a rod or tube running through the cylinder of the steering arm assembly.

I was not sure what it was but I knew I had to do one of two things. Figure out how to remove the rod (which I think is the shifter rod) and continue or put enough bolts back in to hold it together and pull all of it. The boat was hooked to the back of my truck and I had to do one or the other before dark. I chose the latter. I figured a devil that I know is better than a devil I don't know.

Will anyone enlighten me on removing the bracket from the motor shaft. I figured it would be easier to take it apart and blast it rather than trying to sand and paint it in place. When I discovered the leak in the tilt-trim cylinder it made the decision easier. There is also some serious rust I need to deal with.

The motor has less than 200 hours on it so, to me, it is worth the effort to put it in new cosmetic condition. I runs very well and has good consistent compression in all cylinders. There is also a piece of SS trim on the top of the transom I want remove, polish, and reseal so I am killing more than one bird with one, or many, stone(s).

I think I have figured it out. It is the shifter rod. The only way I can see to remove it is to remove the foot, which is no big deal.

Thanks,
