Is there a link that shows a step by step process of removing the PDS bearings from the bell housing? I have the sea-loc & VP manuals & neither address this process. Are the bearings pressed into the bellhousing? From the front I can't see if there is or isn't a snap ring. BTW I'm working on a 1985 290 outdrive mated to a 5.7 chevy engine....Thanks in advance for your expertese....-Rich

You need to remove the motor.
Then there are snap rings holding the bearings in place on both ends.
It's behind the grease seal.
They aren't pressed in. But corrosion can make em a bit hard to remove.

Thank you Jerry, I have removed the engine & upper gear box from the outdrive. The front grease seal is removed also. I sprayed the inside of the housing with carb cleaner & cleaned all of the grease from the bearing. I can see the bearing, but there is no snap ring in front it. This is the reason for my confusion....-Rich

Redeye do you have the 2 bearing PDS or the 1 bearing PDS?
I am not familiar with the 1 bearing PDS.
The 2 bearing does have a snap ring in the front, if you have the seal out you should be able to see it.
Maybe it's been apart before and they left out the snap ring ?
The bearings are not a real tight fit, you do NOT need a press to re assemble. Bottom line, they are usually not that hard to get apart.
I used a 2' chunk of 2" black ABS pipe to tap the new front bearing into place.
Did you order a new U joint bellows? If your old PDS bearings were rusty, water got in there somehow!
Does your housing have the grease fitting installed or just a plug ? You are going to want the space inside between the bearings FULL of grease before you re install.
Someone correct me if I remembered this wrong : new rear bearing goes on shaft, new front bearing goes in housing, slide shaft with new rear bearing in from the rear, install snap rings and seals , pump it full of grease before installing . Inspect the drive plate , flex plate thing that's on the flywheel .

Thank you K-2 FOR YOUR REPLY. With your help I have the shaft out. The problem i was having is i was trying to remove the shaft out the front of the bell housing & not thru the rear. To answer your questions, mysetup has the 2 bearings. There was no snap ring in the front of the housing. I can see there is a groove for one, so I did order a new one. I do have a new bellows. The u-joints look new & have zerk fittings. I'm going to grease them & reinstall. There is a zerk fitting at the 12 o'clock position on the bell housing. The plan is to pumpp the housing with grease before the seals go on so I can see the grease coming thru the bearings. With your help, I should have this barge back in the water soon....Thanks....-Rich
