Removal of upper gear and clutch cone Cobra outdrive

Had my shift lever lock in the forward position while on the water. I was also unable to move the throttle lever into reverse. When I turned the ignition off, I was unable to start the motor. When boat was pulled out of the water, I opened the lower unit to inspect the upper gear housing and found that the shift shoe had scored the clutch cone, there were metal shavings and a rough spot on the cone where the shoe engages. By manipulating the nut above the upper bearingI was able to get the gears to become "unstuck" and normal function was restored. I ran normally for a week or two and then while out on the water, the same symptom presented. Only this time when the shift lever was moved into neutral the prop continued to spin in forward. When I moved the lever back into reverse, the prop spun propelling the boat forward. I brought the boat to the dock and put it up on the trailer and as I suspected, The motor will not turn over as the outdrive is still in gear. I've purchased a new clutch cone and shoe and am having trouble removing the upper gear. Seloc manual shows the gear as being able to be lifted directly out but I can't seem to get it to come out. Does anyone have any experience removing this piece?

where are you stuck? were you able to remove the nut on top of the upper bearing? Pics help

It cannot slide right out. The drive gear assembly, AKA double bear box, has to be removed first.

MAKE sure not to mix up the shims for the 2 driven gear sets. I personally engrave the cups when I remove them.

Throw that darn seloc manual out!!! Use the Volvo shop manual. many can be printed from here
