Hi, this Lower unit.
I'll switch pack which gear rod goes down but I can not cover over. Part No. 45 on the drawing. I'm leaving it up gear stager but it stops at the top, as shown in the picture.

Gear rod is a few degrees towards the very end, but it must surely be?

Doesn't that shift rod unscrew from the lower unit? There is a specification for the shift rod height, when you go to reinstall it.

I beleave the shift rod unscrews and comes out. There should be a measurement to reinstall it.

Either measure from the center of the hole in the top to the cover, or count the number of turns it takes to remove it.

Take the shift rod and screw it all the way in counting the number of turns from where you started until it bottoms out and then back it all the way out pulling both the rod and the cover off. Then pull the rod out of the cover. Replace those o rings in the cover cause it looks like you have some corrosion. When you put it back together screw the rod in all the way till it bottoms and and then back it out the number of turns you counted previously. Then get an OEM service manual to get the correct shift rod height.
