I have just purchased an 87 black max 150 W/oil injection! It runs fine and it is my first engine with oil injection! Its on an 18' Bass boat and gets run pretty hard! I hear that the injection fails sometimes and that scares me a little! Does this particular model have any more trouble than others? I hear do it! and I am told to leave it alone, that they are dependable! Im capeable of doing this myself so cost is not the issue! Also know to use the shaft to hold the bushing inside the engine ! What would you all do ???

Hasbeen

You must be refering to the gear on the crankshaft.

But like I said...Remove the components...have a peek inside...turn the crank and inspect the gear.

TMD

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my 87 175 V6. Been waiting fr parts for about 3 weeks!

Replacing the gear on the cranshaft requires you to open the crankcase. The gear is plastic and mine was pretyy well chewed up. I'm going to premix.

Opening the crankcase just to look at the oil pump gear seems to me to be an unnecessary expensene both in $ and time.

REPERTS:

Did you suffer a meltdown due to oil injection failure?? or just found the gear problem when you tore it down? Cant you see the gear without tearing the engine down?

Hasbeen

Re: Remove oil injection or not??

I have an extra motor for parts(85 150 xr2) that had the plastic gear go bad and destroyed three cylinders. I started hearing the oil alarm on my good motor and decided to pre-mix.(20 bucks) I feel thats great insurance in knowing I'm getting oil in the cylinders. You just have to make sure you put oil in the gas. Some say they are dependable but I Have two that wern't!! Good luck.
CU

-----------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

Hasbeen,

Tore the engine down for another reason. But, after hearing all of the problems that other people encounter with old engines and oil injection. And having to spend more money and time replacing the gear. I feel that the five extra minutes I'l spend premixing the fuel is time well spent.

I don't know about checking out the gear without opening the crankcase. I don't think you are going to see much. It's pretty dark in there.

Reminds me of something an old friend told me a few years ago.

"outside of his mother, a dog is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog is really dark!" I said he was an old friend, not a normal friend

Now if only my parts would get here I can get this engine back together!!

Re: Remove oil injection or not??

Seeing this makes me concerned about my 1988 Mariner 135hp Marathon. I have not had any problems with the oil injection. What all is involved with converting over to mixing fuel and doing away with the oil tank. Does this involve changes to the reserve oil tank on the top of the motor ?

Re: Remove oil injection or not??

Search oil injection etc there are a couple of good threads on going to premix. Pretty easy.
