remove prop shaft 1988 40hp johnson

I have removed the pinion gear and drive shaft but cannot get the prop shaft and forward gear out. any help greatly appreciated thanks

Shift rod must be pushed all the way down before you unscrew / remove the shift rod.

I have tried this with no success, I must have screwed something up trying to pull the shaft in neutral
