Remove the engine with or without intermediate shaft housing?

I need to pull the engine out to replace flywheel. Is it possible to remove the engine leaving the housing in place? The shaft is already removed. AQ271, DP-A single bearing intermediate shaft.

You sure it's a single bearing?
Not positive but I though the 4cyl was the one that used a single.
The V-8 used a double bearing.
Post a pic? I'd like to see the 1 piece.TY
And yes you can remove the engine without the bell housing coming out.
Sometimes the coupler gets rusted and siezes onto the PDS.

I would remove the engine and PDS housing as a complete set. it makes things so much easier putting it back in as a complete unit.

What Scott said, then you can inspect/replace the bearings in the housing at the same time.

remember, the fastest way is almost always the one that is not the "short cut"

you can have your drive off, and motor out in about 1.5 hours by yourself (assuming you have a hoist arrangement and do not have to build it). with 2 people and building a hoisting structure, about 3 hours

then you can also inspect the u-joints on the drive and replace the drive bellows

Yes it is a single bearing housing, I was able to remove shaft out the back of the boat. I replaced bearing and seals last year but I think I damaged the flywheel cause now there is a rattle when I snap the throttle hard on take off or in neutral. I verified the noise with the PDS out.

I will post pictures as soon as photo bucket is done with maintenance. The reason I ask is because it will be a tight fit to wiggle the engine forward enough to clear the PDS housing. Thought I could separate the two and pull straight up. I have a tow truck on standby that will be helping me.

if you have a 271, you have a 2-bearing PDS Connecting Components Drive Unit Sp-A, Dp-A AQ271C - 7743470 - Volvo Penta

Thank you for the reply, I assumed it as a 271 because its written down in the formula owners binder that I got with the boat. I had some issues try to identify the motor drive package because every number I have found the dealer says is no good. Maybe the motor and PDS housing were swapped at one point?

Also what boggles me is that on the PDS it looks like there is room for another bearing, but was not there when I removed shaft. Does the PDS accommodate multiple PDS housings?

or the other bearing is still in the housing.

No it is not in there, I used a inspection camera to look at flywheel when the rattle started. The missing bearing in question would be the one closest to the drive. So do you think I can pull motor without PDS housing?

I pulled a AQ260 without the housing.
Went back in without too much trouble.
Pull the motor and then take some pics of the housing.

Pulled the engine today without the housing. I don't see how this is possible with the housing attached because I had to rotate engine 180 degrees to get it to clear the hatch. Scuffed up the housing a little bit but overall it went pretty smooth. Here are some pics of the housing. After searching a bit it seems that the red housings are the double bearing configuration with a zerk fitting for maintenance. I do not have a zerk fitting anywhere on the housing. Can somebody please confirm that this housing is correct for the 5.7 liter and not just a Frankenstein package done by previous owner? Thank you for your time.

it looks like a later PDS assembly. couldnt tell you what it is from.

The boat is a 1989 206ls formula. The engine has definitely be replaced as the numbers on the block show automotive application. 5.7 lg sgi

casting numbers on the block are the same between a truck and a boat.

So I have been searching for a replacement flex-plate/dampener and some of the pictures I see it looks like the springs are covered. Seems like the plates that have the covered springs might be a better idea to minimize the rattle like the sound I was experiencing. The sad thing is I don't see anything wrong with the part I removed. Can someone confirm which dampener I need?
