Remove VRO & oil tank - Alarm won't stop

1989 Johnson 40HP
I removed the VRO & replaced it with a mechanical/vacuum fuel pump.
I disconnected 3 wire harness from VRO to engine wiring. There are two wires from the oil tank (i cut them to get the tank off) one I believe went from the tank to engine ground & the other to the heat sensor (tan wire). Should I connect the tan wire to the other tan wire in the main wiring harness?
The alarm comes on immediately when I start the engine.

Which alarm? Temp or oil related alarms. Steady beep is OVERTEMP. If that line is grounded the alarm will sound -- thats the way the sensor works.

OK, I unraveled some electrical tape and traced the wires. It appears that one comes from the power source (key) or control/horn area, one from the oil tank (removed), one from the temperature sensor and the other goes up to the area where the ignition points are, probably the kill switch.

At this point I should not worry about the two wires that were cut and worry about the constant horn, which is either a hot engine or a faulty or improperly installed warning horn.

If any tan wires in the warning sytem is grounded it will properly sound the horn.

You need to make sure that all of the connections that formerly ran to the VRO oil tank and to the VRO pump are disconnected and taped off in such a way as to prevent them from contacting anything or each other.

The only tan wire that should now be connected is the one to the temperature switch in the cylinder head.

Thanks for the help. I taped off the wires and alarm is fine....but...
i start it up and it idles around 1000 rpm and then if I give it a little throttle it high revs between 4500 & 6000 rpm's even with the throttle all the way down.
I can even shut it off and pull the key out but it keeps revving like crazy.
I just pulled the fuel supply line off to shut it off & then it killed it after a minute or so.

You never want to run the two strokes above 1500 RPM with no load. The runaway engine can throw a rod right through you. This is especially risky on an engine that has not been de-carbed regularly.

You obviously need to seek a competent mechanic. And while you're waiting for the fix, find the guy that told you it'd be easy to replace the VRO and beat him up ...
