removeing lower unit help

i have a 1984 johnson 40 hp j40elcr and im changeing the impeller for the first time i removed the four bolts that on the outside of the lower unit i removed the bolt that holds the trim tab on and i removed the long bolt that was underneath it the lowre unit droped about 3/4 of an inch and wouldn't drop any more .i dont see any screw on the shift rod where do i go from here.here is a photo of my lower unit progress http://s871.photobucket.com/albums/ab279/sid2jay

You have to disconnect the upper shift linkage. It's under the lower carb. You can get at it from the port side of the mtr. Go to shop.evinrude.com, look up your mtr and go to power head. You'll see the pin that has to be removed. Hope you got some 1/4 " drive tools.
