I have discovered transom problems on my 1988 Bayliner Bass and need to remove the motor. What steps are needed to accomplish this? I am most concerned with the steering but would like any tips you have including lift point and techniques for the motor. Most large outboards I've seen have lifting eyes but this one does not. Thanks in advance.

Remove the two bottom transom clamp bolts. remove the return bar from the steering cable and turn the wheel so the cable is fully retracted. Loosen all the way the cable nut from the right side of the steering tube remove the control cables and fuel line. either remove the battery cables from the engine or from the battery terminals. remove at multi colored electrical cable from the engine

Depending upon year either remove the top mounting bolts or loosed the clamps. The engine weighs about 275 so three men and a boy can lift it off the transom. If you have a lift, the flywheel has three bolt holes in it either 1/4 X 20 or 5/16. Use a steering wheel puller modified to hoist the engine from the transom. IF it is a later Force with Mercury ignition There is a special Mercury tool for lifting and pulling the flywheel off.

Wouldn't it be nice if you had stated the year of the engine too? Assuming it is an 88 engine but assume makes an ASS U and ME.

I use an L bracket and jury rig it to lift.
They do make a lifting ring for the forces.
One for the 50 and one for the bigger ones.
Just gotta find it among the misc parts for Forces.

Oh yea: use any kind of lift. Cause expecting 2 other people to help lift at the same time is probably not gonna happen(I know).
Ended up with motor laying in the grass.

I used a tow strap with loops on either end and wrapped the motor through the leg to create a "harness" and lifted it off with a come along. They didn't give us a nice balance point and lifting tab like they did on other motors. Sure would make things easier.
