Hey all, I need to pull my 1989 175hp rude to replace the transom on my project boat. I have never done anything like this and would appreciate all and any input or recommendations on this matter. I have been doing some searching and watched some videos, so Im not clueless, but I would rather go into it with as much knowledge as possible. I cant seem to find lifting brackets on it, so I was going to make a steel plate drilled out to the bolt pattern on top of the flywheel, and use that with an eyebolt to lift it off( grade 8 5/16 bolts). I will post some pics here shortly to make it a little more clear on my plan of attack and see if most, some, all or any of you agree with this method!
Also, it really seems unnatural to disconnect everything that is going to or from the motor:dread::D
Thanks

Re: Removing 175 hp from boat

you just take off the flywheel nut and screw down a eye fitting with its own thread.

Do not take chances, you do need strong bolts and the crankshaft thread is the best place to take the strain.

im not so sure if your flywheel threads are strong enough or if the flywheel itself would take the strain.
being as you are capable of making a braket, make one thats screws on ,or go directly under the flywheel nut,
this would be best if you cannot get the proper fitting.

good luck with your transom .

You're building what OMC has used for yrs to lift the mtr. Just don't screw the lift bolts to far in so you hit some ignition componet. Curious to see your pics.

Nothing special, .25" steel plate drilled for bolts and eyebolt.

Bolts in the flywheel so you can see where I am talking about.

All put together with my finger holding it up. (There are washers for the bolts)

Looks good. Is there a nut under that center eye bolt on the bottom of the plate ??

holding up a 175hp with just 1 finger

couldnt resist that one

that plate looks like it will do the job nicely. just wasnt sure if the threads in flywheel were good enough
if Boobie says its ok then it sure is.

yes, there is a nut on the bottom side. now, if i could just get the teleflex to come off:facepalm:
when i loosen the starboard side nut, it bottoms out and wants to twist the whole cable

Was the steering working okay before you tried to remove the mtr ?? Meaning lock to lock when turning the steering wheel.

Yes as far as I know it was working fine. Like I said it is my project boat, so I can get to all of the cable and have my boys help twist it and maybe that will allow the nut to come off

Is everything still free now and is the mtr turning with the steering wheel ?? The cable isn't backed up against the side of the boat, is it ??

Everything still works, I pulled the motor off today, teleflex came out, but it took the whole sleeve with it. It looked like it was all one piece though!

If it was the sleeve that goes through the tilt tube and hooks up to your steering link to the mtr, that is normal.

my finger is pointing at what came out

And that is what holds the brackets on the motor. That is why I thought something was wrong

I'm confused. That tube is supposed to be on the mtr with nuts on the ends of it holding it in. Could you post some more pics ??

yea, when i loosen the starboard nut and remove the port nut, the tube slides out with the teleflex in it. I messed with it for a long time, and decided it was meant to come out that way, because it wasnt coming out any other way!:mad-new:

Sounds like your steering tube is frozen in the tilt tube which is not supposed to be. The tilt tube stays with the mtr when you pull the steering out to remove the mtr.

Could you post some pics of what you now have with the steering system and tilt tube. You'll get better answers.
