Hello,
I need to remove my 1988 Evinrude 9.9 cylinder head to scrape out the water passages. Can this be done with the engine still in the casing, please? It looks straightforward enough except that one corner of the head is part of an engine mount attached to the case. Also is it advisable to use any form of jointing when fitting the head with a new gasket?

How did you determine that water passages need to be scraped out ?-----Salt water motor ?---Usually on a freshwater motor the powerhead does NOT need to be removed.-- Just remove that cowling mount nut.-------Broken / stuck bolts may change this approach.

Thanks for your reply. Its an old salt water motor. Tried without the thermostat. If I add water into the thermostat housing there is a good flow out of the exhaust, but a poor flow out of the copper tube that goes down to the water pump when the bottom unit is removed. I have tried salt away, also neat vinegar.

It looks a bit tight to get the head off with the motor in the cowling and certainly needs the engine mount stud removed as well as the nut. Is that the normal way to remove the head on this model?

To remove the cylinder head cover, the bottom two bolts are partially removed (left loose in the head), and the head is lifted up vertically to remove. Rassembly is reverse.

Is this what you mean?

^^edit. Strike reference to head cover (referring to the head). A thin probe (hacksaw blade or similar) works well to clean the water passages surrounding the cylinders. Messy, but push some water up the tube (l.u. removed) to check for blockages. If the new gasket is shiny, it's likely the type that doesn't require sealant.
