Hi again guys :)

so i can see the starter motor on the left underside of the engine, it looks like a real pain to get at, but i need to get it out.

so i'm looking for some tips, i've attached a pic, does it have bolts behind the starter? once i get the bolts out does the starter motor just lift out? does it have a seal?, looking at replacement motors it has a cog which ofcourse engages the motor, do i need to remove/replace in a certain way?

thanks

Ayuh,....

There are 2 bolts, Up thru it at the aft section of it,....

Remove the Cable from the Battery, At the Battery, Then the wires from the Starter(which look lke they need changing, because of Corrosion)....

Then the 2 bolts(3/8" bolts, 9/16" socket) at the Aft, bottom section of the Starter....

The Starter should then fall out into your hand.....

Fantastic, thanks :)

i actually spotted those two aft bolts today, things is so covered in muck they didn't stand out before.

so in reverse, reinstalling it would just be simply fitting it in and bolting it in? seeing as it falls out so easily i assume it goes in easily also :)

thanks again

That's pretty much it, but be aware they can be pretty heavy, so you need to be able to hold it in place with one hand and get one of the bolts started with the other. It helps to have long arms, or you could tie a line around it and have someone hold it up so you can manuver it into position without having to hold up its full weight while you get the bolts started. I did mine on my 88 OMC 4.3 a while back. Make sure you don't have a water leak onto that starter, the cables have a lot of corrosion on them.

Re: removing a mercruiser v6 starter motor

thanks :)

oooo i wish my starter looked nice and new like that!!

the boat had a bilge problem last season on one outing and it had water sloshing around under there which i think caused the problem, agravated by the previous owner forgetting to wash things off after that outing!

edit/ your spark plugs look easy to get at also! i had to get a mirror to be able to see mine, tucked away under the damned manifold

You might consider looking for the new, high torque starter for your engine. I know they're available for the small block V8; not sure about the V6, though I would think it is available because the engine blocks are very similar. The new starter is a little more expensive; but only about 1/2 to 2/3 the size and weight of the old style. Makes it a lot easier to install. Stacking some shoirt pieces of 2" x 4" lumber under the starter to hold it up while you install it also makes it easier. Make sure you use the correct bolts. The shorter one is knurled to align the starter properly. And, one last thing, there is a new style long bolt available with a 1/2" drive head rather than a 9/16" drive head; makes it easier to get a socket on it in the tight area. Good luck. Hy
