removing a oil filter

Is there any type of special tool to remove a oil filter on a 15hp 4stroke merc as the space around the filter is so tight i can barely fit anything in there?Has anyone done this to a 15 or 20hp 4stroke and what did u use to get the filter off?

Also can i just put the new one on by hand tightening it of will it not be tight enough and leak oil u think?Thanks for any info u can give me.
