That depends on the bases you use.
Some will require a center hole for the protruding part of the base.
Some will mount to a flat surface with no center hole.

Screws would not be recommended. They will eventually loosen, and/or strip out.

Use the special boat seat anchoring toggles for mounting seat pedestals. Made for marine environment.

You don't want to use a cheap alternative, and have the seat break loose while someone is sitting in it.

Re: Removing back to back seats with pedastal seats

i have the garlic toggle bolts that are stainless steel 1/4"-20 are they strong enough for 270 lbs man . i use the boat for fishing and i dont treat the boat like 20 year old and dont like rough water . the floor is still solid has 1/4" plywood and fiber glaas on top of it wih carpet . So what happens if i hit a stringer or a rib when im drilling the holes do i use stainless screws 1" or 1 1/2 " . thanks

You have the right toggles. Should be good to go.

If you hit something, you will need to use screws for those holes.
A dab of marine sealant on the threads will help seal things up and keep water out of the stringer.

Just have to be careful and not drill through the hull.

If you hit floatation foam, you will have to use a tool to push the foam away, so the toggle can pivot into position.

What type of seat base are you going to install, base that does not require the big center hole, or a base that needs the 3-4" hole? Also, how thick is your deck? You said 1/4" w/fiberglass, but that seems awful thin. Usually deck plywood is 1/2".

If using bases that require the big center hole I would add in a backing plate under the deck. If the base does not require the big center hole, togglers would be the best way to install the base.

Springfield has under deck base rings that might work well IF you have enough clearance below deck,,, and there are no obstructions.

If you hit a stringer, pray that you hit it in the center and not off to the side. (IE, screw won't grab and toggler won't fit) If screwing into a stringer, pre-drill the hole, jam some epoxy into the hole, apply a thin coat of oil or wax to screw and run it into the hole and let the epoxy setup. Then remove the screw and install the base. You could just epoxy the screw hole and run a bare screw into it while installing the base, but I like to have things removable. Removing an epoxied 1 1/2" screw might be difficult.

(FWIW, Crestliner installed the seat bases in the 1/2" plywood decks of my boat with 1/8" aluminum backing plates and #14 SS screws.)

Thanks for the info . I know that garelick has an under deck base ring to .The base doesnt require a hole. But will the toggle bolts hold a 270 lbs man and you are right the floor is 1/2" with fiber glass and foam . Can i use a stud finder to find the stingers. I have been trying to get info on my boat about the hull and stingers and cant find info any were and the company closed down . 1999 cutter grew fish and ski bowrider.
