We are in the process of redoing a 28' 1991 Pontoon boat. We don't want to buy new rails for it, so we are trying to remove the stickers/decals from them so we can clean them up and paint them. We've tried using a product called Goo to remove these and it seems to just smear the sticker instead of removing it.

Has anyone ever removed the stickers from the rail? If so, what did you use to remove them?

A hair dryer is often effective.

you will need a heat gun to help remove decals, then to remove the glue go to a sign shop and ask to buy the citrus cleaner they use and it eats the glue almost instantly

Stickers stick, that is their job and it is a real chore to get them off and normally it is a 2 part proccess, take off the vinyl then the sticky.

As mentioned a hair dryer or heat gun is best for getting the vinyl off as for the gum I normally use alcohol and lots of rags, watch it if you use a heat gun though, if you get a spot to hot it could warp.

Avaition paint stripper, plastic scraper and a pressure washer. Tried the hair dryer trick and spent 3 hours taking the buckle out of a panel after removing a whole 18 inches of decal. 23 years on the boat and those decals did not want to come off. The stripper was the least destructive method of removing the decals. The pressure washer is great for removing any remaining adhesive. Just shoot at an angle so you don't put a dent in the panel from the water pressure. This method was my last resort after trying everything else. Once dried, the panels were ready for sanding.
Good luck....
