Ok I have a 88 winner fish/ski and I of course have carpet throughout. I fish mostly and this makes clean up miserable. The guy who redid the deck replaced it with 3/4in ply but didn't fiberglass it all in.

He used it as a bass boat and kept it in his garage and theres no rot or wetness to the wood. Luckily this is the easiest boat to do a deck on the stringers and everything is gelcoated and solid(minus the ply deck).. I was interested in gelcoating the main deck in Grey to match the carpet already installed on the front and rear decks as I'm not sure it will look right without it. Then add snap in carpet.

Would this be a sufficient replacement to re-fiberglassing the deck? The current deck is easy to get to and held to the stringers with screws(could remove deck in 25 min) I was going to remove the deck and encapsulate the entire deck and then reassemble or just do the top. This deck is easy to install and I would rather not use fiberglass and replace it every few years because its so easy to do. Will the gelcoat adhere to the wood without any treatment?

Also if anyone has access to any pictures of bass style boats without carpet will you please pm me a link or post. Ive searched everywhere and am unable to find any.

as an alternative i was interested in laying vinyl over the current deck something like deco dot. I understand that this would not provide much protection with water but may make it easier to clean..

Don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for but it has info on gelcoat over wood.

Re: Replacing deck Carpet Vinyl vs Gelcoat

That's a question I often asked myself. I was convinced that carpet was bad on casting decks but I'm not so sure now. It definitely looks better and the concept hasn't changed in new boats for several years now. The carpet has though. It is now snag and soil resistant which makes cleanup a lot eaiser.

I did my casting deck in carpet but I did the hatch covers in closely matching vinyl. We'll see after this season which one stays. My main deck is vinyl from the console back to the splash well. That's where most of my fish end up before they go up front to the live well. I know that area is definitely better off with vinyl and a snap in carpet.

Re: Removing deck Carpet.. Vinyl vs Gelcoat.. Gelcoat as Water protection?

I am liking the idea of using durabak.. I would remove the old deck and purchase new ply(dry it out inside) then use the old deck as a template to start with new material. then encase the new ply in durabak and then reinstall. I would also add snap in carpet. what do you guys think of this idea?

Duraback, why not.. If it doesn't work it's easy enough to replace it. Kind of the same concept I'm working with.
