Removing dried compound from boat

Yesterday I had to leave in a hurry and left a 2x2 area with some compound applied. Since the boat is about 100 miles from my place, I won't be able to go back before next weekend. What ca be used to remove dried compound? I read things from isopropyl alcohol to peanut butter (not sure I want to go down that road). Maybe I can apply another layer of compound over and give it a good buff? Any suggestion?

it depends on the compound, but try water first, a wet towel applied to the surface and left to sit can soften it back up.

If that doesn't work then reappply and then buff, as you said, which should work.

pretty sure a towel soaked in hot water and then left covering the area will soften it up and allow you to buff it out after 10 mins of soaking.

Thanks all for the tips. I ran out of elbow grease last weekend. Works great but efficiency seems to fade out after few hours.

I was thinking about using my steam cleaner but not sure I want to use this on gelcoat. I'll start with few extra cans of elbow grease and hot water.
