I have a 1980 Sunrunner 25' with the chevy 350 and mercruiser outdrive.

Need to remove the engine and put in a new one. if anyone has step by step instructions or good hints and things to watch out for when taking it out and putting one in I would really appreciate it.

Farely mechanical and have removed engines from cars & trucks.

You'll probably want to pickup a Mercruiser repair manual for specific instructions.

Mercruiser engines are remarkably easy to remove. After pulling the outdrive and unhooking wiring, hoses, exhaust elbows, etc.--engines are really held in by a couple of bolts that go through tapered washers on the back of the engine--and the motor mount on the front of the engine. --

It's easiest to remove the lag screws on the bottom of the engine mount that go into the hull--rather than taking the motor mount apart. Then you just swap the motor mount to the new engine without making adjustments (to start.)

You'll need to align the engine with the outdrive through the back of the coupler after all the hookups are put back on.

Hmmm.. Tapered washers???... Never seen one of those on a Mercruiser... And DO NOT align the engine with the drive, use the proper tool!

Here's some videos that might be of help for some of the processes.

Installing drive: http://youtu.be/aGVrY4cWiDA

Once the drive is removed, disconnect the following:-

fuel line
inlet water hose
power steering hoses (if fitted)
battery cable
ground cable(s)
throttle cable
shift cables
exhaust boots
instrument harness plug
remove rear engine mounting bolts
front engine mounting bolts

Lift engine.
