Is it possible to remove the exhaust elbows without removing the risers? I’m not having any luck.

By "riser" do you mean the extentions to raise up the elbow?

When I did it I purchased the two gaskets and pulled the riser. I suppose it's possible to slide the sleeve down, but I ain't man enough I guess, never been able to. Only buy the metal OEM gasket to replace the destroyed ones.

Yes you can. You slide the lower rubber coupler all the way down and then the elbow can slide back out of the upper rubber coupler. I found this thread wondering the same thing and disappointed it wasn't answered so I found a Youtube vid on replacing the flapper.

If the flappers are broken and you're doing this to repair/replace them, maybe check your maintenance log to see when you last checked the internal condition of the risers and manifolds.
Should be checked every 2 or 3 seasons with new gaskets installed.

My boat's previous owner replaced the flappers because they rusted out and broke apart. Manifolds and risers were caked with scale and buildup and rust, and were starting to leak at the manifold <-> riser gasket. If he'd just pulled the risers, he would have known.
