I posted yesterday on stuck fly wheel and also on how to remove exhaust housing from motor. Thanks to everyone who responded to the stuck fly wheel delima , though the problem is still there I'm working on it , however I got no response on how to remove exhaust housing from motor. The motor is a 33 hp johnson 1967 model. I have removed the visible bolts going into the block from underneath but am not sure what else is holding it . The shift lever was stuck but I got it moving but it's still hard to shift and you have to remove the exhaust housing to clean it.

Re: Removing exhaust housing

Your problem may not be inside the exhaust housing but could be inside the gear case. Take out the oil drain screw and see what comes out. Seems like you have a motor that's been sitting around for awhile and it could be the gearcase is dry (or, full of rusty water).

There could be two studs on the top side where the block meets the ex hsg with nuts on them about midway back on each side.

Re: Removing exhaust housing

Sorry to be replying so late I got kinda busy today. The lower unit is off and the gears seem to be working fine though I am going to change out the gear oil . Point being I'm sure it's in the upper linkage. And yeah your right it was hanging out neglected by some inlaws for at least 15 years that I know of so it has a few problems but I'm determined.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I've seen one of them but not having a manual I wasn't sure and didn't just want to keep taking off nuts ,bolts etc... looks like you might have some trouble getting to it though but a second nut I haven't yet seen I'll take a closer look tomorrow.

Those nuts can be a bear to get to. What you can do is get a box end wrench the right size, heat and bend it to get at them. OMC built a special tool to remove the nuts.

Re: Removing exhaust housing

I'll probably head down to the pawn shop and look in thier loose assorted bin to see if I can find one the right size and length and go from there. But man if getting to them to remove them is a bear putting them back on will be a bear times ten. Thanks for the advice.
