Removing float needle seat (Seahorse 18hp 1965)

Hi again - I think I have read somewhere about issues removing the float needle seat but can't locate the thread. I've tried to get mine out but my largest screwdriver only just bridged the gap across the top of the seat and I could not budge it - it slipped and scraped the metal of the seat a little so quickly gave up. Any tips on removal? I have ordered a carb kit and really want to change this part because my old needle doesn't move completely freely.

Thanks all.

I use a T-handled screwdriver, A butter knife with the edge filed off & laid in the slot length wise, gives a good bit of torque as well, the main thing is to have a good fit in the slot, think tongue & groove, a good quality screwdriver with a nice squared tip, not a sharp pointed tip, they sell individual driver tips that fit a 1/4" ratchet which will fit nice and cost less than a buck at any big-box hardware store. cheers

Hit it with some penetrating oil while you go shopping

ya be careful you dont want to bust it up like i did and end up with shards of brass in your orifices!

i actually gave up on my high speed orifice (bottom of float bowl) because i didnt have the proper tool and it began to break.

:eek: Yeah... That can be painful :D

Stjohn,
this is how the screwdriver should fit when you go to unscrew your seat;

Anything smaller may push shards of brass from your seat, into your orifices...

Using an impact type screwdriver with the right bit I've put the carb in my lap to absorb the shock and have gotten the seat out.

All very useful - thanks everyone. The thing was stuck solid but now I feel confident to give it a proper go with the right prep and tool. Great people, great forum.
