on a 1949 KE4 7.5 hp i need to remove the flywheel. I have the tool for the flywheel nut. Any ideas on how to hold the flywheel from turning with out the flywheel holding tool ?

Re: removing flywheel

Yeah, I have one. Fill one cylinder halfway down the downstroke with oil, put the sparkplug in, lay it so that the sparkplug is down. That should be a pretty benign way of doing it. Let me know if it works.

Another way would be to flatten the end of a long reach motorcycle sparkplug, but I can see that possibly doing damage. Then again, if you gut it and jam a short piece of wooden dowel in there...I like that idea, too. But you probably have some oil laying around.

Strap wrench around the flywheel.

Put it in gear and jam the prop from moving...

But don't blame me if it doesn't work..

The more I think about that, the more it sounds like a bad idea. I don't want you messing up your lower unit gears....
Forget it...

Re: removing flywheel

I have raised a piston with the spark plug out to near TDC, and then fed in a length of 3/8 inch line, fairly evenly about the cylinder. I raise the piston to avoid catching the line on the ports and 'slicing' off a bit. Then, I simply crank on the nut until the piston crown compresses the line, and bingo...

Re: removing flywheel

Use an air wrench on the puller hex ... you don't have to hold the flywheel other than with your hand. Quick and easy.

Re: removing flywheel

funpilot has it down pat...at least best and cheapest way to do it without an impact driver or strap wrench. remove plugs...turn flywheel until one bottoms out in its cylinder...insert several inches of 1/4 inch braided line/rope into the spark plug hole on that cylinder...tun the flywheel until the piston squooshes up tight against the rope. now you can pop the flywheel nut off with a wrench. you will need a harmonic balancer puller from an auto parts store ($12) and three hardened bolts to get the flywheel off to service the mag and ignition. the bolts fit through the puller and thread into the three holes on top of the flywheel. you'll figure it out when you see the puller.

Re: removing flywheel

i did this on a 1964 merc 200 the other day.
let it sit overnight with liquid wrench. have one person hold and the nut will come right off.
i would be careful really bearing down on one of my cylinders and shaft that the flywheel sits on. you can break stuff.
when you get the nut off,, put the puller on and tighten it then get a small hammer and GENTLY tap the flywheel around the shaft. and repeat,, it will pop off with the right amount of encouragement.

Re: removing flywheel

You might try to wack the end of the wrench with a hammer. The impact often is enough to break the nut loose even as the fly wheel rotates a bit. I have done it several times on many engines this way. In fact I did it on my 150 Merc when I had to change the failed stator.

Re: removing flywheel

Flywheel nut is off, intact and unmarked. I went with the air impact tool and it only took a few blows with the tool and off it came cleanly. Flywheel came right off with the harmonic balancer puller as soon as i snugged up the puller.
Thanks for all the great ideas !!

I didn't want to leave you all hanging.
Jerome
