I'm getting ready to pull the bell housing in order to replace the bellows.

I'm looking at the Merc manual, section 4B starting at page 15. I do not see anything about removing (unhooking) the gear lube monitor hose.

I know this has to be done in order to pull the bell housing.

What am I missing??
I do not see it anywhere!

The manuals are for Mercruiser trained techs, not DIYers, therefor don't expect every little detailed item to be there all the time. If you can see it needs to come loose, then disconnect it.

You can't read the sarcasam in that.... I was askin for help and all you said was to disconnect it.
Obviously I know it has to be (or would not have posted) and do not know how, (or would not have posted)

Similar to replying "just unhook it from the boat" to someone. aaking a specific question about how to remove an engine.

There is a clip behind the bell housing that i do not think is accessible, and if it is, how to get to it.

But I'm assuming I won't get that answered from you

If you don't have to, leave it!
Should you decide you want to change it, make sure you don't use too much! It's up to the tech to get the proper length!

Ayuh,... Because manual 4 is for outdrives built Before the Alpha 1, Gen.II you've got from 1997....

You need #14...

I said "4B" meaning section 4B, of manual 14.

The info you're looking for might be in section 4A-42.

Understand, service manuals are study books. You need to read & study all sections so you will have a better understand of the layout of the manuals. If you only use your manuals to lookup something you're working on at that moment, then you'll miss the big picture & could cause more problems.

Re: Removing Gear lube Monitor hose

the clip behind the bellhousing is accessable, but just barely...I didnt think of the oil monitor hose when I did my bellows and broke the fitting when I removed the gimball housing ...it is a plastic barb on a 90 degree angle with a spring clip or a clamp I think ...even if I knew then what I know now I am not sure I could have disconnected it properly...order a new one and be prepared to install it ....I removed my broken one, repaired it ,installed it and then doubted my repair ...I then ordered a new one and did the job over...what a pain but it can be done ..lots of light and needle nose pliers..regards,Bob :D

4JS If you havent busted the 90 degree plastic barb that goes thru the transom, just loosen the hose clamp on the bell housing side or it could be connected with a zip-tie.Disconnect there and proceed with repair. If you must replace the C-clip on the inside of the transom it sometimes is tough to get at.Order a half dozen C clips and a nice needllenose plier and go to it Good Luck
