The impeller has two very small notches oposite each other which are no bigger than the width of a paperclip or small needle. Is that where the key is?

It is a PIN and not a key! The impeller slides off so the new one can slide right back on. You cannot, with this one, put it on backwards!

I found a new impeller at a local marine shop at half the price I was going to pay for it at a place on the Internet. Just putting them side by side I can tell how worn the old one was. I doubt if it was ever replaced. Time to put it all back together again. Wish me luck on the crank.

Put a little smear of vaseline inside the water pump housing. It'll aid assembly and it's easier on the new impeller during the first start-up.
