My trim motor is on its last legs and I am going to replace it. Is there anything wrong with just unbolting the motor, slapping a new O ring in there, and bolting on a new motor? My manual has me set to remove the whole contraption but it looks like there's no reason I can't just remove the easily exposed bolts and get a socket on a joint back behind it for the hard one. When the motor will engage (everything up to where the wires go into the motor test good), which is iffy, the trim works great so I have no desire to tear it all down or remove hard-set bolts that may at this point not need to be fiddled with.

Another way is just remove the four mounting bolts & support motor & remove tilt motor.

Are you 100% sure the motor has a problem?

If your mtr hasn't lived in salt water it's a good idea. If it has, those bolts for the mtr like to break off.

It does in fact spent a lot of time in salt water, so we will hope for the best. I have done a lot of troubleshooting and believe it to be the motor. It was intermittent that it wouldn't kick on, first starting with not wanting to go down. Then it spread to up. Even though the relays tested good and I was getting 12v through them, I replaced them figuring I was eventually going to replace the rest so why not just go all the way so that can be ruled out. The switches on the motor and the cowling both test good.

When it was having issues it used to make a gurgling sort of noise then eventually kick on, but now it makes no noise and does nothing. Sometimes hitting it with a jolt of power would make it kick on instead of just gurgling, like turning off the battery switch, putting a charger on it, holding the button, and flipping the battery switch back on. During the last of its declining days I started to think it might actually not be a gurgle but a muffled electrical burning sound.. I may never know. But point is it doesn't do anything now.

Contrary to the title of the post, the plan now is to remove the whole thing and do an overhaul. Its cold out and the fish aren't biting, so better now than spring should I run into problems later.

I half fixed a few things on my first basketcase of a motor and told myself this time was going to be different. I only want to take this trim system down ONCE so I've got both seal kits (trim and also the separate tilt cylinder kit) ordered.
